A spiritual awakening can be a very confusing time in your life. If you are reading this article, you might be asking yourself, am I actually going through this? We can experience major life shifts without experiencing a true Spiritual awakening, in an attempt to finding ways to better our circumstances in life. Sometimes we search for better answers to happiness, that lead us down some amazingly changes in our paths. But the difference in a true spiritual awakening and a change in life path, is, that most spiritual awakenings all have one thing in common. It is usually the start of a profound shift in perception and a future transformation. This can be beautiful and unsettling at the same time. Have you recently felt a profound shift in your perception of the world, seeing lies or falsity in something that shaped your life up until now, or a deep sense of connection to something greater than yourself, or an intense desire for personal growth and transformation?

A spiritual awakening feels like waking up from a dream you have been in, your whole life. Or can be like taking off the rose colored glasses you thought was your truest vision.

You begin to question old beliefs, habits and traditions, and the society you are associated with.

If this resonates, you might be going through a spiritual awakening. But how can you be sure? Let's explore this more deeply and understand what a spiritual awakening truly is.

What is a Spiritual Awakening?

A spiritual awakening is a transformative process. It's a heightened state of awareness and consciousness which leads to the start of a transformation. It often starts with a desire for a deep inner journey, where you begin to question your beliefs, values, and the nature of reality itself. Sometimes these questions are hard or deep and can be something you've never allowed yourself to question.

Once you begin this journey of awakening, it can bring about a profound sense of peace, purpose, and connection to the universe. And as you go deeper sometimes you fall through a void of darkness, also known as The Dark Night of the Soul. Growth and evolution comes barreling down upon you and there is no stopping it.

What are Signs of a Spiritual Awakening

  1. Increased Awareness: You become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions. You start to notice patterns and behaviors that no longer serve you.

  2. Heightened Intuition: Your intuition becomes stronger, guiding you towards decisions that align with your higher self.

  3. Sense of Oneness: You feel a deep connection to all living beings and the universe. The boundaries between you and others begin to dissolve.

  4. Inner Peace: Despite external chaos, you experience a sense of inner calm and tranquility.

  5. Desire for Authenticity: You feel compelled to live a life that is true to yourself, shedding societal expectations and false identities.

  6. Emotional Release: Old wounds and traumas resurface for healing. You may experience intense emotions as you release past pain.

  7. Synchronicities: You notice meaningful coincidences that seem to guide you on your path.

  8. Change in Relationships: Some relationships may fall away as you grow, while new, more aligned connections form.

What are the Stages of a Spiritual Awakening?

The stages of a spiritual awakening can be different for every person. And not everyone experiences them in a specific order. However to get a better sense of some of the stages you can experience, here are some spiritual flow states that may occur:

  1. Triggering Event: This could be a significant life event, such as a loss, a major change, or a deep emotional experience that prompts introspection.

  2. Questioning: You start to question your beliefs, values, and the nature of reality. This stage is marked by curiosity and a desire to understand more about yourself and the world.

  3. Seeking: You actively seek out spiritual knowledge and practices. This might involve reading spiritual texts, meditating, or exploring different philosophies and religions.

  4. Breakdown/Dark Night of the Soul: Old beliefs and patterns begin to break down, which can be a challenging and confusing time. You might feel lost or disconnected as you let go of past identities.

  5. Breakthrough: New insights and understandings emerge. You start to experience moments of clarity and connection with a higher consciousness or deeper sense of self.

  6. Integration: You begin to integrate these new insights into your daily life. This stage involves finding balance and harmony between your spiritual experiences and everyday responsibilities.

  7. Living Your Truth: You live in alignment with your newfound understanding and values. This stage is characterized by a sense of peace, purpose, and authenticity.

More details on The Dark Night of the Soul.

A dark night of the soul can feel like going through a death. This can be one of the most difficult times in your life. Dark night of the souls tend to be a crisis of faith or a difficult painful period in life where you feel alone, disconnected with no light, no peace and you wonder if the suffering will ever end.

However, there IS some light to this. The dark night of the soul is not to be feared, in fact it is an essential part of a spiritual awakening and can healthy and normal. It is the stepping stone for growth, and a sign that an amazing transformation is about to come into your life.

Whenever I am going through this stage, I realize that my soul is stripping away the old making way for the new. Its an essential part of stepping toward your soul purpose.

There can be multiple stages to this, but here are some signs that you are making your way through this:

  1. Disillusionment: You begin to feel disconnected from your previous beliefs and ways of life. This stage is often marked by a sense of emptiness and questioning the meaning of life.

  2. Despair: As the disillusionment deepens, you may experience intense emotional pain, confusion, and a sense of hopelessness. This is often the most difficult stage.

  3. Surrender: In this stage, you start to let go of the need to control or understand everything. You surrender to the process, accepting that you are in a period of transformation.

  4. Illumination: Gradually, you begin to gain new insights and understanding. This stage is characterized by moments of clarity and a deeper connection to your true self or a higher power.

  5. Integration: You start to integrate the lessons and insights gained during the dark night into your daily life. This stage involves rebuilding your life with a new sense of purpose and meaning.

  6. Renewal: Finally, you emerge from the dark night with a renewed sense of self and a deeper spiritual awareness. This stage is marked by a sense of peace, joy, and alignment with your true path.

The Non-Linear Journey

It's important to remember that a spiritual awakening is not a linear process. Everyone's journey is unique, unfolding in divine timing. There may be moments of clarity and bliss, followed by periods of confusion and doubt. Embrace each phase with compassion and trust that you are exactly where you need to be.
